Rose Bruford 2014 - Dissertation on Greek Sculpture

An early drawing copied from an original Greek Sculpture

An early drawing copied from an original Greek Sculpture

You can see here my final piece that I produced during my 'Independent Research Project' or dissertation which was based on the replication of Greek Sculpture within modern industries such as Theatre and Film. I was looking at the importance the Greeks had on figurative sculpture and the progression of skill and style by them. Also the development of materials and processes at the time and which of these have still survived and are used by sculptors and artists today.

The outcomes you can see were produced from a clay piece that I sculpted in response to images and drawings I took from a live model. I then cast this from a two part silicon mould in resin and fibreglass and another outcome in jesmonite with marble powder. I also experimented with creating an outcome using a plaster cast and the VAC forming machine, which was very hard to join two halves to create a fully 3D piece.

I was also lucky enough to work closely with traditional marble sculptor Pat Rae who helped me produce a small outcome by carving into Parian Marble. It was great addition to my project and was really interesting learning how difficult carving into such a tough material is.

For a more in depth description of the project you can read my blog post on the subject here:
